What is an Irish Sweat House?
An Irish Sweat House (or Teach Allais) was a traditional stone structure used for sweating rituals, similar to saunas found in other cultures. These small, beehive-shaped huts were heated by lighting fires inside, then allowing the smoke to clear before people entered. They were used for healing, purification, and relaxation, with records of their use up until the 19th century. Irish sweat houses were a deeply rooted communal tradition, reflecting Ireland’s long history of using heat therapy for well-being.
